New Art Exhibition Explores Impact of Automobiles on Culture and Environment

The Southeastern Railway Museum is pleased to present Drove(s), an art exhibition that takes a look at the culture of automobiles, our dependence on them, and their environmental impact.

The culture of automobiles starts with America's early love affair with cars and the freedom that they promised. Frequent design changes and new technologies created a sense of disposability and a desire for the newest model. Demand throughout the 20^th century helped drive the American economy but also led to an overabundance of automobiles and serious environmental impacts.

The automobile and the freedom it promised led to dramatic changes in American cities. Suburban sprawl now stretches for many miles around every urban center with the car being the only practical means of transport. Too often, public transportation is of little help in an environment designed and built with the automobile in mind, while the promise of freedom has given way to massive traffic jams and a daily drudgery of commuting along overcrowded highways.

Can this dependence on the automobile and fossil fuels be sustained? How do we change our environments to become friendlier to pedestrians and mass transit while maintaining the freedom of movement to which we have grown accustomed?

These are the issues and questions raised by this month's exhibition at the museum. Housed in a newly restored 1871 train depot that once sheltered passengers waiting for their train, the depot itself is as much a part of the exhibit as the art hanging on its walls.

The exhibition will open to the public Thursday, January 12 and run through Saturday, February 11. At this time of year, the museum is open Thursday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The exhibition features works by local artists as well as artists from around the country. These include:

Events

• Requirements: Image (color or monotone) must have been captured at the Southeastern Railway Museum in Duluth, GA. Image must focus on an exhibit, a piece in the collection or show individuals enjoying their experience at the Southeastern Railway Museum (signed releases required for recognizable persons).
• Entry Deadline: February 25
• Exhibit and Judging: March 3 - April 1, 2012
• Download entry form here and submit with each entry. One form per photo, one CD/DVD per photographer.

  Model releases are required for identifiable persons that are not a museum volunteer/staff member. Download here

  For your convienence, we're adding paypal as an option to pay your entry fees. For entries of 1-3 photos, select the 1-3 rate and enter the quantity of photos you are submitting. If you're entering 4 or more, select the 4-5 rate and enter a quantity of 1.

• One of the museum's diesel locomotives Southern #8202 , or Georgia RR #1026 provides the motive power for our on-site train rides.
  
• Our steam locomotive Georgia Power #97 is not available due to mandatory FRA inspections and maintenance.

• The Board of Directors meeting is held on the second Thursday of each month. These meetings start at 7:30 in the museum's audio/visual room in building #1. (Click here for directions to the museum)
  
• The chapter meeting is held on the third Saturday of each month at the museum. Meetings include a brief program and social time
